In 2014, the world's largest and most famous cymbal manufacturer had been in business for 391 years. To celebrate this, and to prove that Zildjian is still the leading name in the cymbal making industry, the people at the Zildjian Soundlab released a special series of cymbals under the moniker 'Project 391'. After 391 years of making cymbals, it may seem like there is little left to discover or innovate. But nothing could be further from the truth, because with these Project 391 cymbals, Zildjian managed to find a particular sound that had been missing from their (already very impressive) palette of sounds. These cymbals were released as limited editions, so be sure to order yours quickly.
Project 391 series: the special B15 alloy completes Zildjian's sound palette
Judging by their timbre, these cymbals can be placed somewhere in between the A or K series and the ZBT series. It's the material that makes these cymbals so special. For the Project 391 cymbals, the folks at the Zildjian Soundlab developed a special alloy that they had never used before. This B15 alloy consists of 85% copper and 15% tin, giving the cymbals a beefier low end than the B8 or B12 alloys would, while still keeping their fierce attack and high end tones. This resulted in very bright sounding cymbals with a large dynamic range and a great balance between high and low tones. No matter if you're a hard hitter or a more nuanced player, these cymbals sound great in any pop or rock setting.
Project 391 19-inch china
The Project 391 series consists of 15 cymbals in total. With its 19-inch diameter, this china is the middle child of the three china cymbals in the series. And it's not just a china, it's a piece of history you'll be getting! Not just because the Project 391 series of cymbals are very limited edition models, but because the B15 alloy used to create them has never been used in Zildjian cymbals before. This cymbal has a bright, brash attack that nicely balances high and low overtones.
