Matrix panels are an increasingly common sight on many stages, mainly because they allow pixel mapping to individually control each LED separately. Several of these matrix panels combined form a full LED screen that even allows for video display. American DJ have now taken matrix panels one step beyond with this Illusion Dotz 4.4, a 4x4 matrix panel in the housing of a moving head that allows for a whole new dimension in moving light panels. This moving head allows you to send beams of light in several colours in every direction. What's more, the light source of this Illusion is so powerful, you can use it as a blinder.

COB technology in the Illusion

For this Illusion Dotz 4.4, American DJ have once again turned to COB LED technology. This Chip On Board technology is a very effective way of lighting as the TriLEDs are mounted to a chip, taking up less space than conventional LEDs and thus allowing for more powerful LEDs with smoother and more efficient colour blending. This Illusion is also equipped with same reflectors that you find in traditional Par and blinder lighting, for a homogeneous light beam. Naturally, this American DJ moving head features several built-in programs and can be controlled via DMX.

Art-Net and Kling-net

Modern lighting fixtures need ever more DMX channels to fully control all of their functions. A conventional DMX controller can usually only control a single universe of 512 channels. When you take into account that this moving head alone needs about 200 channels for full functionality, it's easy to tell that any other expansions are fairly limited. Art-Net, however, can control up to 32768 universes of 512 channels via an affordable Ethernet cable. Kling-net is a protocol for sending out real-time video data to several displays, such as LED panels, also via an Ethernet cable. This American DJ Illusion Dotz 4.4 is ready for the future as it has an Ethernet-connector for both Art-Net and Kling-net applications.
