Roland is evidently pleased with their JD-Xi. In addition to the original black version, they also offer the synth in two limited editions with a white and a red finish respectively. Thanks to its bright colour, the latter in particular really stands out; how many other red Roland synths can you think of? The JD-Xi is a portable analogue/digital crossover synthesizer with more features than you'd initially think. It boasts a 129-voice polyphony, for instance, that combines 128 digital voices with one analogue one.

The sound of the JD-Xi

When it comes to sound, the JD-Xi caters to all imaginable preferences. The analogue monophonic voice enables you to produce outstanding bass lines, which will appeal to real synth fans in particular. The 128 sample-based digital voices are a little more generic, including pianos, strings and drums. A number of effects - reverb, flanger, distortion - are also at your disposal, ready to become an integral part of your output. With so many options in such a practical, compact housing, the Roland DJ-Xi is a great instrument for gigging musicians.

Other characteristics

The analogue section of the JD-Xi offers a choice between sawtooth, triangle or square waveforms (with adjustable pulse width). The synthesis system is simple but effective - after all, most key players don't have time to deal with hundreds of parameters during a gig. The JD-Xi features an x0x-style step sequencer, as well as an arpeggiator, and the synth's microphone input allows you to complement your own vocals with a bit of additional technology.
