We're almost inundated with reissues of synth-concepts from the '60s, '70s and 80's in varying forms. Most vintage synths are reappearing as software plug-ins or an exact physical replica and sometimes, a homage made by an entirely different brand. Most of these models are emulating classic analogue synthesizers, organs, string-machines or electric pianos while, waiting patiently in the mists of time was the Korg Wavestation: an incredibly unique instrument for its time that could do things its contemporaries could either only dream of, or have great difficulty attempting. With the Wavestate, Korg offer not just a reissue but an entire reworking of this potent '70s wave-sequencer.
Features of the Korg Wavestate
In essence, this instrument places sections of sounds one after the other, allowing them to overlap. The Wavestate houses 1,000 of these wave-sequences alongside a massive array of synthesis-potential including an army of filters, a mass of modulation options and an overwhelming bank crammed with effects. Since the Wavestation was notoriously awkward and laborious to programme (due to the sheer volume of parameters and sheer lack of controls to operate them), the Wavestate has thankfully been improved with a number of much more friendly control elements to create highly unique, atmospheric filmic textures.
Who Needs This?
Since the Wavestation was famously used by New-Age writers, and, we're now sitting in a resurgence of fascination among musicians and dance producers with the synths that created these particular soundscapes, the Wavestate will get more than enough attention. The Wavestate could be seen as yet another function-heavy synth but nothing could be further from the truth. Korg's quality team didn't just twiddle their moustaches for a bit and then whack out yet another button-box since, of all the synths popping up right now, this really is perhaps the most unique; the one that barely resembles any other contemporary synth. The XY-stick above the pitchbender is a perfect example of this. This little joy-stick is used to determine the balance between the four layers. This is the kind of stuff you just don't get to see that often.

Korg Wavestate wave-sequencing synthesizer
Naast mijn analoge Deepmind 12 van Behringer, heb nu deze Wavestate van Korg aangeschaft en dat is een heel ander beestje. Wave sequencing is een totaal andere aanpak. Laat je net beetnemen door de wat kleinere uitvoering (3 octaafs brede keybed) want het ding heeft enorm veel mogelijkheden. Layering tot 4 lagen boven elkaar. Leren hoe het ding in elkaar steekt en "programmeren" vergt wel wat leertijd, dat heb ik al door, maar je gaat meermaals verbaasd staan van wat deze krachtpatser allemaal tevoorschijn haalt. Mogelijkheden: enorm; klanktechnisch: zéér goed; keybed voelt iets "lichter" aan dan gewend; geen aftertouch wel velocity.
De behuizing is inderdaad licht uitgevoerd in kunststof maar men kan 2 houten sidepanels (op internet zoeken) aan de zijkanten toevoegen waardoor het er professioneel uitziet. Tijdens het spelen merk ik niets van die lichte kunststoffen behuizing. Maar de technologie die binnenin aanwezig is voor die lage prijs, is een winner. Trouwens dikke duim voor Bax voor de zeer snelle en correcte levering.

Niets anders werkt..niet de s.w niet de coupon voor de gratis s.w..niks.
Korg forums zijn vol van die klachten..wat heb je aan een synt die geen
user samples kan loaden via de s.w..niks..miskoop..return zeker voor de prijs
die ik heb betaald voor B stock..wat meer is dan nieuw van Thoman.
Ik heb de synth gekocht vanwege nergens te krijgen in Holland.
In plaats van te wachten tot whenever ..second hand sales are now as low
as 350 euro's elsewhere in Europe..so my purchase at Bax music store is
way over priced..hope this helps anyone considering buying this synth.
Don't buy it..because it does'nt work as advertised!!

Heb de synth zelf al bespeeld bij een vriend. Die is super, geen twijfel. Wat minder is is de service. Bij het bestellen zag ik dat er 50 in stock waren. 'vandaag besteld morgen in huis'. Had hier dus een dag vakantie voor genomen van werk. Vandaag krijg ik een mail dat het vertraagd is door 'de vervoerder' hoewel als ik ga kijken op track n trace krijg ik de melding het pakket zelfs nog niet is klaargemaakt door de afzender...

Geweldig instrument en geweldige geluiden
maar niet voor bangeriken.
Het programmeren van je eigen geluiden en sequenties vergt nogal wat studie, maar is echt de moeite waard. Er zijn veel nuttige Youtube-video's om te helpen. Nu versie 2.0 beschikbaar is geeft het veel meer mogelijkheden met een mooie editor en librarian. Je kunt zelfs je eigen geluiden laden.

Prima instrument met prachtige klank. Het duurt natuurlijk wel even voor ik alle opties door heb, maar dat is tegelijkertijd dan ook de uitdaging. Het kwam lekker vlug via de bezorgdienst binnen en was uitermate goed en zorgvuldig verpakt.

De diversiteit aan sounds en modulatie is wel haast oneindig. Het maken van eigen performances is echter wel een tijdrovende klus. Er zijn zoveel parameters. Maar volhouden is het devies in deze. Kost tijd maar het resultaat is er naar. Veel over te vinden op Youtube en een uitgebreide handleiding te downloaden op de Korg site. Steile leercurve desondanks een toppertje !!
Last but not Least....De service van BAX is zoals gewoonlijk weer TOP.

De Wavestate is een opmerkelijke synth met een heel eigen, en typisch karakter. Het idee van de sample sounds die je in onnoemelijk veel combinaties over elkaar kan leggen is zeker interessant. Maar ondanks dat de Wavestate makkelijker te bedienen zou zijn dan zijn voorganger de Wavestation is hij toch bijzonder gecompliceerd. De leercurve is daardoor erg stijl en kost heel veel tijd. Daarnaast is de synth qua bouw echt iets te 'plastic' wat nogal in contrast staat met zijn kunnen. Kortom, wil je bijzondere 'sound-scapes' produceren en beschik je over heel veel tijd dan is het beslist een bijzondere machine en de moeite waard om hem te leren kennen.
