This is the ultimate edition of the popular Gretsch G9450 Dixie 5-String Open-Back Banjo, a solid and affordable five-string banjo that has been redesigned to produce an even better sound, and now features a rolled brass tone ring. Other new additions to the G9450 include a high-quality Renaissance head manufactured by the renowned brand Remo and a set of Grover Sta-Tite tuners for ultra-stable and supple tuning.
The fifth string of the G9450 Dixie Banjo
The Gretsch Dixie Banjo is fitted with four strings plus an additional shorter fifth string, making it ideal for bluegrass and country music. A separate tuner located on the side of the neck enables you to tune the fifth string to a pitch that matches the key of the music, so it produces a typical droning sound that is audible in each chord. If you like, you can use a separately available fifth-string capo to quickly make semi-tone adjustments.
Playing the banjo
A bluegrass banjo like the Dixie Banjo is usually played with a thumb pick and two fingerpicks, which enable you to create the rich, characteristic fingerpicking banjo sound that defines many bluegrass and country songs. As opposed to a closed-back model, this open-back banjo is relatively light of weight and offers a moderately sharp tone.
