The surdo is the largest samba instrument and provides the kick drum for the rest of the band. With the SU22, Meinl offer a 22-inch with an extra fat drum depth of 24-inches, giving it all the volume it's going to need. However, since the SU22 is made of aluminium rather than the traditional steel, it's actually pretty lightweight despite its heavy sound, making it perfect for samba percussionists who need to drive entire parades.

The SU22 is finished traditionally with a relief around the edges of both the top and the bottom while the synthetic batter head is painted black and punctuated by a centred Meinl logo in white.
