With the Belle Epoch, Catalinbread have faithfully recreated the legendary Echoplex EP-3 tape echo, including the preamp. Even all-rounder and gear nut, Eric Johnson was impressed with the sounds of the Belle Epoch. This echo pedal sounds so authentic, you'd almost think there actually is a tape in it! The stompbox is compact and maintenance-free, but still has everything that made the EP-3 so loved. During development, the preamp, the self-oscillation, the ability to adjust the recording volume, and the way the pedal responds to amplifiers and other pedals, were all important forethoughts that have the Belle Epoch into something more than an effects pedal. In other words, it's almost an instrument in and of itself.
The Belle Epoch: A New Era
Better 'delay' times are coming with the Catalinbread Belle Epoch. To get an idea of what this pedal can do for you, it is best to try the pedal on its own through an amplifier with a clean setting first. With Echo Sustain and Mod set to minimum, Mix set to 12 o'clock and Echo Delay wherever you like, you can experiment with the Record Level control. You'll notice that the sound varies from a whisper to full and loud with just a touch of overdrive. Echo Sustain adjusts the level of repetition and, in conjunction with Echo Delay, you can really go to town. Just be aware that things could get quite extreme! If it all gets a bit too loud you can use the Mix control to adjust the volume.
