Left-handed vintage instruments are pretty hard to come by. What's more, if you do find one, it's usually nearly impossible to afford. That's why Fender Japan decided to release reissues of left-handed vintage Stratocasters, including this one: an affordable classic from 1968 with a beautifully aged Vintage White finish. The Fender Stratocaster Japan '68 Vintage White MN is a replica of the original '68 model.

With a string nut width of 40 mm, the '68 Stratocaster is certainly different from most other strats, as their string nuts are usually 2 or 3 mm wider. The advantage of this slender maple neck is that it provides more comfort, especially combined with a thin C profile and old-school 7.25" fingerboard radius. What's not too old-school, however, is its sound. With three Texas Special pickups, this Japanese Strat has a sound that brings to mind Stevie Ray!

Ha scritto quanto segue su Fender Japan Classic '68 Stratocaster LH Vintage White MN

Op het moment dat ik dit schrijf lees ik dat dit juweeltje momenteel is uitverkocht en pas over een halfjaar weer beschikbaar komt. Tjonge, wat ben ik blij dat ik dit prachtige instrument op tijd bij Bax heb besteld. Inmiddels heb ik de gitaar nu ongeveer twee weken in huis en ik heb er maar één kwalificatie voor: Fantastisch, in één woord. Ik had al heel goed exemplaar van een USA 50th Ann. Strat met 1954 CS pickups dus ik dacht, met deze aanschaf, wel iets te moeten inleveren op geluid, afwerking en bespeelbaarheid. Per slot van rekening was de USA strat een veelvoud van het bedrag van deze Japanse Stratocaster. Niets van dit alles. Sterker nog, de Japanse Vintage White wint het zelfs op afwerking en bespeelbaarheid. Ook het geluid is schitterend, iets helderder dan de USA maar nooit scherp. En dan de fabrieksafstelling. Over het algemeen ga ik een nieuwe gitaar direct te lijf met schroevedraaiers, inbussleutels en tangetjes om mijn favoriete afstelling te bewerkstelligen, maar in dit geval was het niet nodig. Ik ontving, pakte uit, plugde in en begon te spelen. In één woord, zalig. Alles klopte. De intonatie de halsafstelling, de actie en zelfs de tremolo stond correct afgesteld. Even een beetje bijstemmen, de tremolo een paar keer heen en weer en de gitaar blijft verder meer dan prima op stemming. Het enige wat ik heb vervangen is de ouderwetse stringtree die de twee hoogste snaren moet begeleiden. Deze heb vervangen door een moderne rollerstring. Dat werkt gewoon nog beter.
De pickups zouden volgens Bax Texas Specials zijn maar dit heb ik op het web niet terug kunnen vinden. Er wordt altijd gesproken over 'standaard Fender Single Coils'. Het zal me verder een zorg zijn want ze klinken gewoon heel erg mooi, open en met heel weinig bijgeluiden. De vijfstanden-schakelaar voelt beter aan dan die op mijn USA model. Vreemd, maar het is zo. Ook de potmeters zijn soepeler. Aanzwellen van tonen is een eitje en geeft echt dat 'cello'-achtige gevoel.

Ik heb de vijf standen vernoemd naar enige van mijn favoriete Strat spelers:

Advies: mocht dit instrument weer verkrijgbaar zijn, niet twijfelen. Top!!
