If you're looking for a reliable shell set, you have quite a lot to choose from. For a Standard Rock configuration, the Pearl EXL725/C249 5-piece shell set Export Lacquer Honey Amber might be an interesting choice. It's the value for money that makes it special: much like Pearl's other Export models it offers remarkably high quality for a very reasonable price. In this set you will find a 22 x 18-inch bass drum, with 12 x 8 and 13 x 9-inch toms mounted on top with the Opti-Loc tom mounting system. This system maintains the relevant resonances, while keeping the toms firmly in place. To your right will sit the beautiful 16 x 16-inch floor tom and the great-looking 14 x 5.5-inch snare drum can be placed in front of you. Pearl also included the Hardware Pack 830 with the EXL725/C249, so you get three cymbal stands (crash, ride, hi-hat) including a pedal for the hi-hat. A snare drum stand and a bass drum pedal are also present.
The sound is the most important aspect of any musical instrument, and that is something Pearl has never forgotten. For the shells, the company chose a 7.5mm thick, 6-ply combination of poplar and Asian mahogany. The sound is absolutely delicious: deep and rich enough to almost make you forget its attractive price-point. The 45-degree bearing edges and the triple flanged hoops also contribute to the quality of the sound. Cymbals are not included, and considering the enormous amount of available choices that might just be for the best. All those different materials, sizes and features make cymbals a very personal choice.
