The Hawaiian name for a ukulele roughly translates as 'jumping flea'! It's not exactly the most flattering name for a small stringed instrument that's so fun to play. The ukulele is based on the Portuguese machete that was brought to the Hawaiian islands by immigrants in the early 20th century where it became the ukulele we know and love today. From bedroom to concert hall, there's always room for a ukulele!
