The idea for Melodyne was born in 1997. Musician and science-aficionado Peter Neubäcker started working on a program that would make it possible to edit the pitch of monophonic audio tracks while still maintaining its natural sound. Since then, it has become one of the most advanced pitch/timing correction software packages in the world and is now available in four editions: Essential, Assistant, Editor and Studio. This Essential edition is ideal for performing simple (yet extremely accurate) pitch and tempo adjustments.

This version, which is compatible with both Windows and Mac platforms and suitable for 32 as well as 64-bit systems, is more user-friendly than ever before. Thanks to a fresh new interface, you can locate an off-key or poorly-timed note in a monophonic vocal or instrumental track and correct it in no time. While many DAWs have a built-in pitch correction tool, even the smallest alteration can lead to an unnatural-sounding result. How Melodyne works

Start by importing one or more audio tracks (vocals, instruments, percussion, etc.) into Melodyne as a stand-alone, or use the program as a plugin in your DAW. The software then detects each tone's pitch, length and volume of the audio track(s) with great accuracy, and presents them in a clear overview. You will immediately be able to see which tones are out of tune or not timed well, and the software can automatically correct them. A big benefit of Melodyne's software is that you can also adjust everything by hand for an even more natural-sounding (or creative) result.
