Back in the day, many guitarists turned to a certain Mr. Keeley to get their trusty blues pedals tweaked and modified. Following years of successful modding jobs, Keeley now serves up a range of premium effects pedal of his own, including the Super Phat Mod that offers you that praised Keeley-tone in the form of a gold-coloured, eye-catching overdrive pedal. The Super Phat ensures a natural break-up of the overdriven sound, which benefits expressiveness and essentially makes your fingers an extension of your sound. Also, since there are two modes to select here, namely Flat and Phat, you technically get two overdrives at your disposal.

The Super Phat Mod: Superb JFET

Just like the original pedal, the overdrive effect of the Super Phat Mod is designed in such a way that it sounds as good as a tube amp and pull every last bit tone out of your guitar pickups. To achieve this, Keeley first started out on a quest for the perfect FET transistor, and soon found a hidden gem inside an old piece of Toshiba gear: a special JFET. It's this transistor alone that takes care of most of the remarkable transparency and full-range capabilities the Super Phat Mod offers up. This brilliantly customised, hand-made pedal works great as a standard overdrive but also serves well as a tube amp booster. If you're a down-right blues player, you'll definitely want to pick up the Super Phat before today ends. If you're into other styles, you might want to follow suit.

Keeley Super Phat Mod pedale overdrive

I did a bit of research to find a blues driver and this little fella

came up.

It's just the ticket, less noise and high quality.

I love the sounds and that it's very responsive to playing.

You can tell the amount of thought and design that has gone into this pedal. Great.

It was also a good price.

Keeley Super Phat Mod pedale overdrive

I never had a regular blues driver, so I can't compare it to the original, but this is a very nice drive pedal on its own merits.



It isn't a smooth overdrive, like a tube screamer, this thing has some real grit to it. It works great on low drive settings to give your base tone some more character without messing with the eq too much, and if you turn up the gain you get some nice saturation with a very present top end, without it getting harsh. At max it gets some fuzz-like characteristics, especially with the phat switch engaged.



The eq is fairly flat, but it does roll off some bass. The phat switch seems to boost the lower mids which works great to beef-up the sound of single coils. The tone knob does a good job of taming the highs and has more than enough range.



If you're looking for a gritty overdrive with a great range of tones and without a pronounced mid-hump, you won't be disappointed with the super phat mod.
