While renowned for providing the backbone of Hot Tuna as well as Jefferson Airplane, Jack Casady's renown is maybe only topped by his legendary bass. Since Casady loved the orignal Gibson semi-hollow body but wasn't so excited about the pickups, he started to tinker, and it was only after years of experimentation that he was able to find the superior sound and acoustic response that he was looking for. Here, Ephiphone serve the masses with their Casady-collaborative piece, finished with all of Casady's own mods and tweaks: the eminent Jack Casady Signature Bass.
The Jack Casady Signature Bass: Semi-Hollow, Full Sound
The lion's share of the tone this guitar is able to produce is provided by the semi-hollow, fully-maple body. While the construction adds airiness, the use of maple balances things out with characteristic shimmer and sparkle and the mahogany neck brings the definition and warmth. When compared to most standard semi-acoustic basses, this model bears a relatively standard 34 inch scale length, so that uniquely, you're getting a kind of solid-body-bass sound feel from a genuine hollow-body.
A Single JCB-1 Humbucker
Jack's ultimate sound is delivered by a single, very special pickup mounted in the middle: the JCB-1. This low-impedance humbucker guarantees natural tone wiped clean of any hum or distortion, and using the fitted Varitone switch, the elastic nature of this pickup can be further opened up and tweaked to fit pretty much any playing style. This unique combo of tradition and tone-chasing refinement results in a bass that has since become a hero in its own right.
